Move More, Sit Less

Move More, Sit Less

Many of us train hard for an hour, then sit for the rest of the day: at the desk, in the car, on the sofa. Our bodies were built to move often and in many directions. When we stay still for hours, hips stiffen, shoulders round and energy drops.

The good news is that you don't need more time in the gym. You need more movement spread across your day.

Think in movement snacks

A movement snack is a short burst of activity, one to three minutes, that breaks up long periods of sitting. Set a reminder every 45 to 60 minutes and choose one:

  • 10 slow bodyweight squats
  • A hip flexor stretch on each side
  • Shoulder rolls and a few arm circles
  • A deep squat hold for 30 to 60 seconds, holding onto a desk if needed
  • A walk to refill your water bottle, the long way round

Change positions often

There is no perfect posture, only the next posture. Alternate between sitting, standing and, if you can, sitting on the floor. Each position loads your body differently and keeps your joints moving through their range.

Walk whenever you can

Take phone calls standing or walking. Walk for ten minutes after lunch, which also helps digestion and steadies your energy. Get off the bus one stop early. These small choices add up to thousands of extra steps without a single extra workout.

Make it easy

Keep a mat or a resistance band near your desk. Put your water on the other side of the room. Design your environment so moving becomes the default rather than another task.

Fitness is not only what happens during your session. It is how you move during the other 23 hours.
