Hydration: The Overlooked Performance Tool

Before you blame your programme, your sleep or your motivation for a flat session, ask a simpler question: did you drink enough today? Even a small drop in hydration can make effort feel harder, reduce concentration and slow recovery.

Signs you need more water

  • Dark yellow urine or going to the bathroom very rarely
  • Headaches, especially in the afternoon
  • Feeling tired or foggy without a clear reason
  • Muscle cramps during or after training

Build an easy daily rhythm

Instead of forcing litres down at once, attach water to things you already do:

  • A large glass when you wake up, before coffee
  • A glass with every meal
  • A bottle on your desk that you refill twice during the work day
  • Sips throughout your training session

A practical guide is to keep your urine a pale straw colour. Your needs rise in hot weather, at altitude and on long or sweaty training days.

When electrolytes matter

Water alone is enough for most everyday training. Electrolytes, mainly sodium, potassium and magnesium, become important when you sweat heavily, train for more than an hour, or train in the heat. A pinch of salt in your water, a balanced electrolyte drink or simply a salted meal after training can help you replace what you lose.

Food counts too

Fruit, vegetables, soups and yoghurt all contribute to your fluid intake. Another reason why a plate built around plants supports how you move and feel.

Hydration is one of the cheapest, simplest performance tools you have. Make it a habit and you will notice the difference in both your training and your day.
